Guimarães is the Cradle of Portugal, full of History and Culture. This Medieval City was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. Guimarães, a city of medieval origin, has its roots in the remote 10th century.
It was at this time that Countess Mumadona Dias, widow of Hermenegilde Mendes, ordered the construction of a monastery, which became a center of attraction and led to the settlement of a population group.
Guimarães Castle was awarded the Five Star Regions Award in the “National Monuments” category. The Five Star Regions Award is an evaluation system that identifies, according to the Portuguese population, the best that exists in each of the 20 districts (including autonomous regions) in terms of natural resources, gastronomy, art and culture, heritage and other regional icons national reference; as well as rewarding Portuguese companies that differentiate themselves at a regional level.
Its construction began between 1420 and 1433, at the time of the marriage of D. Afonso with D. Constança de Noronha .

Considered today as the heart of the city, in the 17th century it was an extramural square next to the town's main gate, where the cattle fair and other various products were held.
In 1791, the Council allocated the land next to the wall for the construction of buildings, which were later built according to a plan possibly coming from Lisbon, and thus marked the beginning of the slow transformation of Toural. In the second half of the century, the Public Garden was built, surrounded by an iron fence, which opened in 1878. Urban furniture framed in the new iron architecture was created for this space: bandstand, urinal, benches and lamps.
The Largo da Oliveira owes its name to a centuries-old olive-tree planted on this same site. Surrounded by picturesque houses that are typical of the north of Portugal, it is the ideal starting point for a walking tour of the city´s streets. But, in the square itself, there are also a number of interesting features: on the eastern side is a curious Gothic shrine, built in the reign of D. Afonso IV to commemorate the Battle of Salado, where the Portuguese and Castilian forces together defeated the Moorish army from Granada, in 1340.
Forming a very old part of the city, this square is surrounded by beautiful houses with typically northern features, simple three-storey 16th and 17th-century constructions, whose wooden balconies illustrate the great skill of the carpenters at that time.
Tradition has it that St. James the Apostle brought an image of the Virgin Mary to Guimarães, which he placed in a pagan temple that stood on this site, so that thereafter the place became known as the square of St. James (São Tiago).

It provides a journey of almost 2 km, in just a few minutes, to the top of the mountain, overcoming a difference in level of 400 meters, between Hortas station and Penha station. From the inside, depending on the space occupied, you can see the magnificent Penha hillside or a panoramic view of the center of Guimarães. The trip takes place in closed cabins with capacity for 6 people, 8 of which are adapted for transporting bicycles.
To the splendor of the Sanctuary, standing tall at the top of the Mountain, is added a landscape of well-preserved dense trees, strongly punctuated by the grandeur of the granite and unique corners with rocks, hermitages, pedestrian paths, fountains and water courses, picnic areas and viewpoints with a fantastic landscape as far as the eye can see.
